Aftermarket Parts

The Pitfalls of Using Aftermarket Parts

Customers should be concerned and question auto body shops that agree to install non-OEM (“Original Equipment Manufacturer”) parts, also known as aftermarket parts, on their vehicle at the direction of insurance companies. Insurance companies are required to pay for repairs to restore a vehicle back to its pre-loss condition. To save money, insurance companies often demand that aftermarket parts be used by auto body repair shops. Insurance companies can save any where from 30% to 50% by using aftermarket parts. Although insurance companies claim that there are only minimal differences between aftermarket parts and OEM parts, auto body specialists disagree.

Aftermarket parts, usually manufactured in Taiwan, often do not fit properly. The gauge of the metal of the aftermarket part may not conform to the OEM part. Often times, the quality of the aftermarket part is substandard in the lines and contours of the OEM part, thus they do not match. However, some auto body technicians will massage the metal to make the aftermarket parts fit, but this requires more labor and does not always work. In addition, aftermarket parts are more likely to rust and corrode due to inadequate priming and corrosion protection.

Another important concern arises when an aftermarket part is installed and an adjacent part is later damaged. The poor fitting aftermarket part’s presence creates an additional obstacle to the repair. For instance if a damaged fender is replaced with an aftermarket fender, what happens later when the hood or door needs to be replaced?

Finally, what consumers need to know is that the use of aftermarket parts in some cases will void existing warranties and reduce the car’s resale value. Aftermarket parts are inferior to the OEM parts and are therefore incapable of returning a car to its pre-loss condition.

Insurers who compel auto body shops to use Aftermarket Parts and auto body shops that comply do a disservice to their customers. We at United Auto Body recommend OEM parts because they do not compromise the safety, appearance, and value of your vehicle.
